SOCIB Data Repository selected for preparation of the CoreTrustSeal certification in the framework of the FAIRsFAIR project

SOCIB Data Repository has been selected as one out of 10 repositories for receiving CoreTrustSeal repository certification support and the associated financial incentive, in the frame of the FAIRsFAIR project -Fostering Fair Data Practices in Europe-.

SOCIB applied to the FAIRsFAIR project call in line with the SOCIB Data Quality Strategy. SOCIB is currently implementing a Quality Management System of its Data Management component, following IODE’s Quality Management Framework (ISO 9001:2015). As part of its Data Management Program, the SOCIB Data Quality Strategy adheres to the FAIR data principles and its application across SOCIB Data Quality Program. It is expected that the CoreTrustSeal repository accreditation will have high impact in the FAIRness of SOCIB Data Repository and thus improving the quality, reliability and visibility for all kind of end users of the SOCIB data assets.

FAIRsFAIR project aims to supply practical solutions for the use of the FAIR data principles throughout the research data life cycle. Emphasis is on fostering FAIR data culture and the uptake of good practices in making data FAIR. FAIRsFAIR will play a key role in the development of global standards for FAIR certification of repositories and the data within them contributing to those policies and practices that will turn the European Open Science Cloud programme (EOSC) into a functioning infrastructure. In the end, FAIRsFAIR will provide a platform for using and implementing the FAIR principles in the day to day work of European research data providers and repositories. FAIRsFAIR will also deliver essential FAIR dimensions of the Rules of Participation (RoP) and regulatory compliance for participation in the EOSC. The EOSC governance structure will use these FAIR aligned RoPs to establish whether components of the infrastructure function in a FAIR manner.

CoreTrustSeal offers to any interested data repository a core level certification based on the DSA-WDS Core Trustworthy Data Repositories Requirements catalogue and procedures. This universal catalogue of requirements reflects the core characteristics of trustworthy data repositories and is the culmination of a cooperative effort between DSA and WDS under the umbrella of the Research Data Alliance to merge their data repositories certifications.

SOCIB’s Data Center will receive the following support from FAIRsFAIR:

  • Dedicated guidance for internal self-assessments of CoreTrustSeal application, that will be test peer-reviewed by experts as preparation for formal submission to the CoreTrustSeal certification process;
  • Certification process support by a multidisciplinary expert team that organises at least two face-to-face training and consultancy workshops in 2020 and 2021 for selected data repositories to attend, as far as possible organized back-to-back with other major EOSC events;
  • Peer-community support of mature data repositories that are selected for the second support initiative of this call.

FAIRsFAIR will monitor the self-assessment and certification process of selected data repositories throughout the duration of the project.

Currently the SOCIB Data Repository is accessible through the SOCIB Thredds Data Server and is discoverable through the SOCIB Data Catalog.

FAIRsFAIR “Fostering FAIR Data Practices In Europe” has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 project call H2020-INFRAEOSC-2018-2020 Grant agreement 831558.
