SOCIB present at OceanObs19 conference

SOCIB was actively present at the OceanObs’19: an ocean of opportunity conference held in Honolulu (Hawai), September 16-20th, 2019.

SOCIB participated in several areas, such as Ocean Best Practices, Ocean Literacy, Outreach and also leading one of the OceanObs19 Community White Papers on Challenges for Sustained Observing and Forecasting Systems in the Mediterranean Sea.

OceanObs is an international conference taking place every 10 years to pool the ocean ocean observing community to enhance and optimize ocean observing towards a fit for purpose observing system ensuring societal, scientific and economic benefit. The OceanObs’19 was again a great success with 1.368 participants74 countries represented, 2.500white paper authors600 posters and 60 exhibitors. The program had been built around 4 major themes from Monday to Thursday, respectively: inspiration, information, innovation and integration.

An important Conference Statement was presented on the last day, outlining the importance of sustained ocean observations to respond to key societal challenges and stakeholders and the importance and the opportunity of the UN Ocean Decade 2021-2030 to prepare a well- defined action plan strongly rooted on state-of-the-art science, open data and ocean best practices. The real challenge of integration and innovation was repeated throughout most of the presentations as was the need for new governance structures and the importance of society engagement from the beginning.
