LABORATORY

R/V SOCIB has a 27 m2 working laboratory organized in 2 areas:

  • Wet Lab: This area is equipped with spacious work surfaces with integrated guides for the optimal location and restraint of laboratory equipment, such as pH meters, filtration manifolds, mixers, etc. and a Millipore filtration system for pure water on board.
  • Dry Lab: Here the main computer rack contains the control units for all the oceanographic equipment available on board (thermosalinograph, acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP, etc.).  A total of 14 screens enable the real-time display of information from all 5 computers, both to control the ship's equipment, and to monitor navigation, deck operations and safety.

AFT WORKING DECK

R/V SOCIB has a 60 m2 aft working deck with the capability of mounting both 10 and 20 foot containers. The aft door of the laboratory opens directly out onto the working deck. An adjustable "domo" camera installed on the starboard side allows safe control of operations from within the laboratory.

The deck is equipped with a stern A-frame an extendable aft crane on the starboard side, and a double horizontal capstan winch to support crew tasks. In this area there are the compressor air intakes to charge diving tanks.

From this deck there is access both to the stern work platforms, located in each of the skates of the vessel, and also, to the boat's workshop and the diving compressor space.

UPPER DECK

In this 30 m2 area the hydraulic winches, the port crane and the starboard A-Frame are located.

From a console on the upper deck, the crew has control over the hydraulic winches, the starboard A-Frame and the ship’s helm.

On the upper deck we also find the tender, an extra freezer and the survival equipment (both suits and liferafts).

This deck has double access from the outside by a staircase that connects with the aft deck and directly from the wheelhouse.

STERN HYDRAULIC PLATFORM

The boat has a stern hydraulic platform placed on the port skate to facilitate loading and offloading operations from the tender (or other vessels) to the main deck of the ship and also to facilitate access for divers into the sea, etc.

DIVERS PLATFORM

This broad platform allows crew to work almost at the sea level and it's useful for divers recovery once they have completed their tasks.

SIDE POLE

This pole, mounted on a custom support located on the port side, allows scientific equipment to be mounted. These devices can be connected to a computer onboard. Designed for probe heads, sidescan sonar and a variety of other sensors and instruments, its termination can be adapted to any requirements of R/V SOCIB's costumers.

The system allows the tilting of the pole to get the equipment out of the water in order to travel and to put them back into to the water in a quick and efficient way.
