SOCIB and the Global HFR network published in Frontiers in Marine Science

SOCIB HF Radar Facility has substantially contributed to the publication of an article on the review of the current status of the Global High Frequency Radar Network, highlighting the major challenges for data production and applications and the establishment of the goals for the future.

HF radar technology for surface current mapping is becoming a standard and cost-effective component for ocean observing systems, contributing to the paradigm shift toward ocean monitoring. This cutting-edge remote sensing technology has been widely implemented in the last two decades (i.e. 400 stations are currently operating and collecting real-time surface current information worldwide), with a remarkable growth in applications in the last decade.

In terms of applications for marine safety, IBISAR service is included in the publication as a significant effort to promote the use of the HFR data as reliable surface current input of the Search and Rescue emergency response and environmental modelling tools in the Iberian-Biscay-Irish regional seas.
