"Follow the Glider" at the Science Week 2016

SOCIB participated at the Week of Science and Technology 2016 with "Follow the Glider” (FTG) an activity in line with SOCIB mission of presenting the new challenges in oceanography, specifically adapted for kids (from 6 to 15 years old). This activity is based on the educational application tool developed in the framework of JERICO Next project, in collaboration with CEFAS and IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB). The aim of the project is to help students from a variety of different grade levels to find what underwater gliders are and gain awareness of their importance for coastal research.

“Follow the Glider” also strives to enable students to monitor the gliders that SOCIB is currently using in the Balearic coastal area. This will enable to better understand our sea, and protect the environment and its biodiversity, gain a better understanding about climate change, and provide more accurate forecasts of its impacts, contributing to sustainable use of marine resources.

SOCIB engineer and glider pilot, Marc Torner, introduced the activity showing how a glider works to the students and teachers of IES Politècnic Highschool and King Richard III School. These activities were done in collaboration with IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) and the Balearic Islands CSIC Institutional Delegation.
