SOCIB at the EOOS Event at the European Parliament

On the 8th of September 2016, SOCIB participated at the first European Observing Observing System conference that took place at the European Parliament hosted by Member of the European Parliament Ricardo Serrão Santos. The event, entitled ‘Building a European Ocean Observing System’ attracted over 70 participants from across Europe, as well as Members of the European Parliament and representatives of the European Commission’s Directorates General for Research and Innovation, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Environment, and Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs.

SOCIB Director, Joaquin Tintoré, elaborated on the link between science, technology and society, emphasizing the importance of gathering information on the ocean state and variability at different temporal and spatial scales and that cannot be oversimplified. Joaquin Tintoré also pointed that communities need to work together across all uses of the ocean taking advantage of technological innovations that lead to new opportunities. EOOS would be a key agent that can help science and technology stakeholders work together.
