Access to the glider fleet

The ICTS SOCIB offers access to its fleet of underwater gliders based in the Balearic Islands. This is a unique opportunity for scientists and engineers to use these observation platforms, which can operate from coastal areas to the open sea, to carry out research, monitoring or testing of instruments and sensors.

Among the objectives of the SOCIB ICTS, is to promote the use of its fleet of gliders by public and private research groups belonging to national or international communities, offering a percentage of open access to the capacity of its equipment on a 'Competitive Open Access' basis for use by the scientific community, which can count on the support of the scientific and technical staff of the Glider Facility.

Access modes

Access to the Glider Fleet is regulated by a public Access Protocol that describes the mechanism and criteria for access to this facility.

Access to the Glider Fleet is offered in two modes:

Access on demand

The SOCIB ICTS is open at all times to receive requests to make use of the glider fleet, the technical feasibility of which will be assessed by an Internal Panel. The acceptance of this type of proposal is conditioned by the availability of glider units and by the workload of the technical team of the Glider Facility. The costs of use of this infrastructure, under this type of access, can be consulted in the list of usage fees.

Competitive Open Access

In order to be able to submit an application under this type of access, a Competitive Access Call must be open. The applications received to these calls are evaluated and prioritised, according to criteria of scientific and technical excellence, by an Access Committee external to the ICTS. The fees for competitive access services will be lower than on demand.

In both cases, applications should be sent to the following e-mail address glider.access@socib.es
